(Bent County, CO) -- Multiple fire departments were called to help on a wildfire Tuesday afternoon in Bent County near John Martin Reservoir. Bent County Sheriff Jake Six tells us that initially ten agencies responded and state aid was called to come and help on the fire near county road 18 and JJ. Highway 50 was closed both directions due to smoke in the early hours of the fire. A helicopter arrived to help douse the fire from the air using a bucket. High winds continued to make firefighting efforts on the ground challenging.
Spring weather in Southeast Colorado often brings wildfires with dry vegetation and high winds.
