(La Junta, CO) -- East Otero School District Superintendent Dr. Reece Blincoe would like to have a new roof on the high school in La Junta. Blincoe explained at Thursday's La Junta Chamber of Commerce meeting the district has applied for a BEST Grant to hopefully make that happen.
It will be a three million dollar project overall with two of that three million coming from the state's BEST Grant.
Dr. Blincoe said the deadline is February 10th for the grant and they should know soon if they were awarded the grant.
According to the Colorado Department of Education's website, BEST provides an annual amount of funding in the form of competitive grants to school districts, charter schools, institute charter schools, boards of cooperative educational services, and the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind.
The money can be used to build new schools or improve existing ones with renovations.
The funds come from The Colorado State Land Board, the Colorado Lottery, and money from taxes on pot as well as the local matching dollars.
The grants are competitive and just because a district applies for the grants, doesn't mean they'll be awarded. Dr. Blincoe finished by saying if that happens, they'll just resubmit the grant and apply again.
