The Colorado GOP Loses Battle on What Some Called "The Most Egregious Gun Bill Ever"

Writer: Anne Boswell TaylorAnne Boswell Taylor

After spending all day Monday debating Senate Bill 25-003, the legislation has passed the House on a third reading and is headed to Governor Jared Polis for him to sign.

The bill prohibits activity involving semiautomatic firearms, and, in connection therewith, prohibiting the manufacture, distribution, transfer, sale, and purchase of specified semiautomatic firearms.

Both sides went to the podium to speak out on why they felt the bill shouldn't pass or should be passed. More than 30 amendments were added to the bill before it passed the House on Monday.

According to the most recent fiscal note on the bill, the cost of the bill had increased from its original expectations. Those in opposition to the bill pleaded with their colleagues before a vote was taken, stating they felt that it would eventually be an unfunded mandate of costs to counties. Those against the bill also stated the bill is a violation of the second amendment rights of Coloradans. Those for the bill replied they wanted to keep kids safe.

There's a lot to un-pack on the bill, and the many changes it underwent before being adopted on Monday.

You can read the most recent version, the amendments and the fiscal note (how the state expects to fund the legislation) here:

Some Republican lawmakers have called Senate Bill 25-003 the most egregious gun bill they've seen to date.

The bill prohibits the manufacture, distribution, transfer, sale, or purchase of certain semiautomatic firearms, with certain exceptions, including for persons who have completed qualifying firearm-related courses. It classifies rapid-fire devices as dangerous weapons

The bill is now headed to the governor's desk.

Here's a video clip from District 47 Representative Ty Winter.
