Special Weather Statement for Southeast Colorado

Writer's picture: Anne Boswell TaylorAnne Boswell Taylor

(Las Animas, CO) -- We are used to seeing weather warnings and statements for severe thunderstorms, snow, ice, wind but we had to research a little more this morning when we noticed a not so usual weather statement. A hydrologic statement from the National Weather Service for our area in Southeast Colorado. The short of it is when it warms up and ice breaks off and could cause jamming which could cause flooding in some cases.

Here's the statement:

Hydrologic Outlook National Weather Service Pueblo CO 929 AM MST Fri Jan 24 2025 ...SPECIAL HYDROLOGIC STATEMENT... This statement is primarily for the Arkansas River in Fremont, Pueblo, Crowley, Otero and Bent Counties. This statement is valid from Jan 24 to Jan 30, 2025. Warming temperatures has led to the break up and movement of river ice. Accumulating river ice at bridges, river bends, or other channel constrictions may lead to jamming and elevated river levels. Flooding is not expected at this time. However, elevated river levels from ice jams can occur rapidly and with little notice. Please report any flooding to local law enforcement and emergency management, and heed caution when near the Arkansas River.
