(La Junta, CO) -- Otero County district court will hold a motions hearing today for murder suspect Edward Aragon who has been behind bars since the 2015 death of his girlfriend. The trial has been delayed for many different reasons since then.
Earlier in January, the 16th Judicial District Chief Judge Mark MacDonnell put out an administrative order that due to Covid cases on the rise, all trials set for January would be delayed.
In February, the case made it to trial but Judge Michael Davidson, of the 15th judicial district declared a mistrial after it was learned that evidence was allegedly mishandled. The court felt it would need to be heard again to make sure justice is properly served. A jury trial date is already on the docket or calendar with the 16th judicial district for June.
Aragon will be on trial for the 2015 death of his girlfriend, 23-year-old Amanda Ybarra.
Monday's court date is a motions hearing and expected to last three and a half hours where evidence will be presented and witnesses called to testify. The hearing is set for 1:30 in division A of district court.
