Operation Hungry Hearts Seeks Food, Volunteers for Event in Las Animas

If it is to be, it is up to me.

A Las Animas woman is organizing an event to feed the elderly, disabled and the homeless because she says she feels she can do it and responded, "why not?"

"If I'm actually in a place where I have the resources or the tools or skills to provide a need to my community, why shouldn't I?"

Twenty-seven year old Ky'eira Ta'tyanna Hemphill is a wife, mom, and student but is still finding time to put together this first time event. It will be in Las Animas City park January 8th, from 11am-1pm, so she's coming down the home stretch.

She still needs quite a few things to make it work but she's pressing on because she feels it's very needed.

"I feel like we need to challenge ourselves more individually to take initiative within our communities, it's very easy to sit there and complain about the issues we're facing, however it's our job as the next generation to actually do something about it and if we don't see people our age doing it, then we wonder, is it even possible to do."

One year from now Hemphill hopes to be able to say she's started her own non-profit to affect some serious change from Bent County to beyond in Southeast Colorado.
