(La Junta, CO) -- As of April 30th, Southeast Colorado is losing another OB/GYN unit. Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center CEO Andy Flemer told a group of community members that it was a decision that was hard to make. Flemer made the announcement during the La Junta Chamber of Commerce's Business, Lunch, Talks zoom call.
Flemer said with a gap of about $200,000 a month, they could not continue to staff the department. He said there would be no lay-offs as a result of that decision, that other positions in the hospital would be identified and offered to staff working in Obstetrics/Gynecology.
Flemer said they are working with the city mayor and attorney to try and find funding to keep it open.
Many rural Eastern Colorado hospitals have closed the OB/GYN units. According to Flemer, Burlington was a recent closure.
