Southeast Colorado has a lot of windy weather in the spring so firefighters are getting ready for what could be an active wildland fire season.

La Junta Fire Chief Brad Davidson recently spoke to the La Junta Chamber's Business, Lunch Talks group and gave an update of how they're preparing. Davidson said they've been training

"Due to all the moisture and stuff, there's going to be some early growth, and we hope that the outlook shows that it's supposed to be kinda wet for a while, and then drying out. We've been trying to gear up for that, doing some special training, getting some wildland trucks ready."

Davidson added that his department has also been out doing some education on fire safety to include getting ready for "Safety Jam" a public event in La Junta planned for the end of June.

Sunday, the National Weather Service issued a special red flag warning for most of the Southeast Colorado counties, Pueblo, Western Las Animas County, Otero County, Bent County, Prowers County and Baca County. The Eastern Comanche Grasslands are included in the warning which is set to expire Monday, March 3rd at 7pm, unless reissued.

Wind gust up to 55 miles per hour with low humidity elevate fire danger during this time.
