Firefighters in Las Animas Battled a Large Fire Friday Afternoon

(Las Animas, CO) -- Multiple units of the Las Animas Fire department responded Friday afternoon to a report of a fire in a vacant building just west of the Bent County Courthouse. The fire at 8th and Bent was in a building near the railroad tracks and was producing large plumes of thick, black smoke when firefighters arrived. Calling the building fully engulfed they kept water on it to keep it from spreading to nearby buildings and let it burn out. The Bent County Sheriff assisted with closing off highway 101 south of the fire and other nearby streets. Fire investigator Lieutenant Bill Williams of the Bent County Sheriff's office said it will be a day or two before an investigation can determine what caused the fire. The winds were calm and made fighting the fire easier. No mutual aid was called to assist this time.
