Code Enforcement Officer Set For Court

Updated: May 20, 2022

(Las Animas, CO) -- Greg Campney has ten business days before he will appear before a judge in district court in Bent County. The Las Animas Code Enforcement officer turned himself in on Monday after a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with the Ft. Lyon fires.

Champney is on paid leave right now awaiting his court hearings. Recently, he was part of a group of city workers who received a five dollar an hour raise in fact. That action was decided by council on the night of the Ft. Lyon fires.

According to documents we obtained, the fire's estimated monetary damages from that fire that burned 3,000 acres and destroyed two homes are upwards of $389,000.

Champneys's hearing on advisement will be June 6th at 1:30 pm at the Bent County Courthouse. This is the first trip to court and the charges that Champney faces will be read.

Las Animas City Council will hold a special call meeting next Tuesday, May 24th at 6pm.
