(La Junta, CO) -- Otero County proudly announced at this week's County Commissioner meeting that they were approved for a grant that will help make Highway 50 much safer.
County Administrator Amy Tanabe announced the approval of the 67.5 million dollar project to begin as soon as this year. The Colorado Department of Transportation will be partners on the project using their right of way for the lane expansions. Forty-point-five million of the project comes from federal funding with $13.5 million in non-federal state funding and $13.5 in other federal funding. CDOT will be the fiscal sponsor and are matching $27 million in state and federal funding as well as being the muscle behind the construction.
Because federal funds will be used for the project counties will be working closely with the Federal Highway Administration and CDOT will be conducting environmental surveys. Otero County will be expected to work closely with CDOT and the FHWA to make sure permits are requested and approved.
The project will help ease congestion and make passing safer for all vehicles.
According to Tanabe, the work is expected to begin next year and be finished up by 2028.
